Black cowboys, whose names were erased from official history, ride back onto the screen. Filmmaker Cécile Denjean, drawing upon rare archival footage and testimonies from historians, rewrites the myth of the Wild West. The film reveals that one in four cowboys was African American, and that many legendary cattle trails were first blazed by them. The viewer journeys along forgotten paths, encountering stories of enslaved people who became hired drovers and riders who found their freedom in the saddle. This investigation does more than restore justice—it fundamentally alters the iconography of the American frontier.
