🎬 MovieFinder's Take

Georges Franju constructs a narrative on the delicate contrast between theatrical grandeur and grim reality. He explores the fragile boundary between playacting and life, where a costume and a fictitious rank gain dangerous power. The film relies on an ironic, almost fairy-tale atmosphere that gradually gives way to an unsettling premonition.

Those who tire of grandiose war epics will find a poignant, intimate story of coming-of-age and self-deception. What lingers after the final frame is the bitter realization of how easily romantic myth shatters against ruthless fact. — MovieFinder Editorial
