In Search of Lost Time
Six-year-old Duàn Ruàn finds herself among thousands of children relocated from overcrowded Shanghai to Inner Mongolia during the 'Three Thousand Orphans' campaign. The girl is taken in by a family of steppe nomads, who give her the new name Naran, meaning 'sun'. Years later, her brother embarks on a journey across the grasslands to find the sister lost in history's whirlwind. Their paths intertwine with the fate of a Mongolian family, where silent love and the harsh laws of the steppe test every bond. The film explores how memory of homeland and acceptance of foreign culture shape identity across decades.

🎬 MovieFinder's Take
Erlan Zhao crafts an epic canvas where personal dramas intertwine with historical context without becoming a dry chronicle. The camera lingers on actors' faces longer than necessary, allowing viewers to read entire stories in a silent gaze or an uncertain smile.
What lingers after viewing is a profound sense of quiet resilience—the kind that allows roots to grow in the most foreign soil. The film becomes a meditation on what we carry and what we must release to survive. — MovieFinder Editorial
