Hu Bayi, sent to the countryside for re-education, carries with him a single surviving book: 'The Sixteen-Character Yin-Yang Feng Shui Secret Technique.' Later, while serving in the army, this esoteric knowledge saves his life when he plunges into a Tibetan chasm. After discharge, he and his friend Wang Kaixuan join an archaeological expedition to Xinjiang, led by Shirley Yang. Their mission is to find the lost desert city of Jingjue. The team must endure countless perils, discovering that the ancient traps and curses buried in the sands are far more tangible than the shifting dunes of the Taklamakan.
