An important representative of Chinese documentaries, Kang is one of the most prestigious directors in China whose worked in the medium; his 1990 film "Sand and Sea" won the Asian Glory Union Award, while 1997's "Yin Yang" has been hailed as a profound documentary reflecting on themes of rural life in China.
