Barnes and another driver were speeding and jockeying for position, the other driver lost control, hit a parked vehicle, and the parked vehicle struck a family of innocent pedestrians. The boy was killed, the boy's mother and infant sister were horribly injured. Both Barnes and the other driver were originally charged with second degree murder. They pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter and were both given jail time. Barnes was released in 2013 after serving 5.5 years of an 11 year sentence.
