Родился 29 марта 1943 года в Саут-Шилдсе (Великобританиия). Британский актёр, сценарист, продюсер, режиссер, один из комиков группы «Монти Пайтон». Родился в семье лётчика Королевских ВВС. Рано потерял отца — когда Эрику было всего два года, Эрнест Айдл, служивший во время Второй мировой войны в военно-воздушных силах, погиб в декабре 1945 года в дорожной аварии, возвращаясь после демобилизации домой.
